Paediatric Podiatry
Children’s Foot Health & Gait Development in Prestonpans, East Lothian
Why Children’s Foot Health Matters
Children’s feet are not just small versions of adult feet — they are constantly growing, changing, and developing. How a child walks, runs, and moves during these years can influence comfort, coordination, confidence, and long-term musculoskeletal health.
At Adam Smith Podiatry & Sports Clinic, paediatric podiatry focuses on:
- Healthy foot development
- Early identification of movement issues
- Preventing small problems becoming bigger ones
- Reassuring parents when development is normal
Often, the most valuable outcome of a children’s podiatry appointment is peace of mind.
Gait and Development: The Heart of Paediatric Podiatry
Assessing how a child walks and moves is one of the most important parts of paediatric podiatry.
Children naturally go through many stages of development — flat feet, in-toeing, out-toeing, toe-walking — and many of these are completely normal.
Our role is to:
- Assess gait and posture
- Understand age-appropriate development
- Identify when something is within normal limits
- Identify when intervention may be helpful
This prevents unnecessary worry — and ensures timely support when it’s genuinely needed.
When Should a Child Be Assessed?
A podiatry assessment may be helpful if a child:
- Complains of foot, ankle, knee, or leg pain
- Trips or falls frequently
- Walks on tiptoes consistently
- Has noticeably uneven walking or running
- Struggles to keep up with peers
- Has footwear that wears unevenly
- Has a family history of foot or gait problems
Equally, many parents simply want a developmental check-up — and that’s perfectly appropriate.
Verruca and Skin Conditions in Children
Verrucas are extremely common in children, particularly those who:
- Swim regularly
- Use communal changing rooms
- Play sport barefoot
- Have minor skin breaks
While verrucas are harmless, they can be:
- Painful
- Embarrassing
- Persistent
- Stressful for children and parents
At our Prestonpans clinic, we offer:
- Gentle assessment
- Honest advice on when to treat vs monitor
- Child-appropriate treatment options
- Reassurance and education
Not every verruca needs treatment — and we’ll always explain the why behind our recommendations.
Other Skin and Nail Conditions We Commonly See
Paediatric podiatry also supports children with:
- Ingrown toenails
- Thickened or damaged nails
- Callus or pressure areas
- Cracked skin
- Minor infections
Early management often prevents pain, infection, and anxiety.
Flat Feet, In-Toeing and Out-Toeing
Many children have flat feet — and most grow out of them naturally.
We assess:
- Foot posture at rest and in motion
- Muscle strength and flexibility
- Balance and coordination
- Overall movement patterns
Treatment is only recommended when:
- Pain is present
- Function is affected
- Development is delayed
- There is clear biomechanical strain
When needed, support may include:
- Advice and monitoring
- Footwear guidance
- Exercises
- Orthoses (only when appropriate)
Children in Sport
As children become more active, foot and lower-limb injuries become more common.
We regularly assess:
- Young runners
- Footballers
- Dancers
- Gymnasts
- Multi-sport children
Paediatric podiatry helps:
- Reduce injury risk
- Support performance
- Manage growth-related pain (e.g. heel pain)
- Build confidence in movement
What Happens at a Paediatric Podiatry Appointment?
Appointments are designed to be calm, friendly, and age-appropriate.
They include:
- Discussion with parent and child
- Observation of walking and running
- Gentle assessment of feet and legs
- Clear explanation in plain language
- Honest guidance on next steps
There is no pressure to treat — reassurance is often the best outcome.
Common Questions Parents Ask
Do flat feet need treatment?
Should verrucas always be treated?
Not always. Many resolve on their own. Treatment depends on pain and impact.
Will orthotics weaken my child’s feet?
No — when prescribed appropriately, they support development, not hinder it. We only supply orthotics with a rehabilitation and exercise plan to help strengthen and improve foot and lower limb function, working in conjunction with the orthotics.
Is it too early to check gait?
No — early assessment can be helpful, even if no treatment is needed. The youngest person we have assessed for mechanical problems was just over 1 year old, and recently had started walking!
