What are orthotics?

Orthotics are a widely used treatment for a multitude of complaints. An orthotic is a shaped insole that fits in footwear to offer support to the underside of the foot. They can help to alleviate pain and reduce pressure by spreading the load more evenly. Additional alterations or customised shapes may be introduced to give the orthotic more functionality.

Musculoskeletal conditions such as plantar fasciitis, bunions and nerve neuromas may be managed with an orthotic device. The shape of the orthotic can introduce greater or reduced range of motion of joints in the foot and help assist in improving biomechanical alignment. Orthotics however will always be used alongside other treatments whether it is a stretching or strengthening regime, acupuncture, strapping, shockwave or laser therapy.

It may be recommended by your podiatrist to wear an orthotic while doing exercise or for everyday activities to reduce stress or strain, therefore comfort is a key factor to an orthotic device. At the end of the day the fit and shape must do a job but it must be comfortable to wear for the user.

Customisation

Orthotics are very specific to each patient, whether it be the arch height or shape, the functional additions or even the materials they are made of. All these elements help to make the insole more comfortable for the patient while giving the podiatrist the required prescription to instigate an improvement in symptoms.

Our Sidas customised orthotics allow us to do just that. We have a number of devices available that are customised to each individual patient via a very simple moulding method. They take less than 20 minutes to shape and the best bit is you don't have to wait weeks for them, take them home immediately after your appointment.

FAQs

Will an orthotic fit all my shoes?

An orthotic, due to it's specific nature will not always fit in every type of footwear. However, it is important that it fits well in your shoes. Bringing regularly used footwear to your orthotic appointment will help your podiatrist create the best option for you and in turn will give the best possible outcome.

How can you ensure they are comfortable?

Comfort is key to the use of an orthotic. An uncomfortable orthotic will end up in the bin rather than being used in the way it was originally designed. We can supply a wide variety of options, some with more padding, some fully customised to your foot shape and some with different width fittings to use in narrower shoes. We will take you through the different insoles that may suit your requirements prior to fitting.

Can I use them straight away?

Yes and no, the functional design of an orthotic may change the shape of your foot and can feel strange at first for some patients. We recommend spending an hour wearing them for the first day, and increasing this time gradually. This will allow your foot to desensitise to the new support. By the end of the first week you should be almost spending all day in them.
